This dissertation explores the treatment of urban spaces in Latin American
dirty realist fiction from the 1990's to the present, focusing on the works
of Guillermo Fadanelli (Mexico), Fernando Vallejo (Colombia), and Pedro Juan
Gutiérrez (Cuba). From Puerto Rico this dissertation analized writers
Francisco Font and Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro.

investigates the ways narrative, theatre, and performance art negotiate
identities across Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the United
States, and larger global contexts. This dissertation includes a chapter that
analyzes how Mayra Santos-Febres' novel Sirena Selena vestida de pena (2000)
and Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro's Caparazones (2010) question the construction and
