Angela Y. Davis (USA) - Scholar Through activism and scholarship, Davis has been deeply involved in movements for social justice around the world. The author of nine books and Distinguished Professor Emerita of the Univ. of Cal. Santa Cruz, Davis draws upon her own experiences in the early 1970s of being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List.” Having helped to popularize the notion of a “prison industrial complex,” she now urges us to think seriously about a world without prisons and a 21st century abolitionist movement.

OWWA (The Organization of Women Writers of Africa) is organizing Yari Yari Ntoaso: Continuing the Dialogue, a major conference on literature by women of African Ancestry in Accra, Ghana, May 16-19, 2013. This free gathering will put writers, critics, and readers from across Africa, the USA, Europe, and the Caribbean in dialogue with each other through readings, roundtables, screenings, and performances.
More than 50 poets, fiction writers, playwrights, and scholars from 15 countries have agreed to attend, but many of them are struggling to raise their travel funds. $7,000 of the $10,000 we are raising will go towards participants, and every dollar over $10,00 will help more writers attend! The remaining funds will pay for documentation and an improved website so those who can’t attend in person can stay updated online.
OWWA is deeply saddened by the loss of its President and Co-Founder, Jayne Cortez, the amazing poet, performer, and activist described by The New York Times as “one of the central figures of the Black Arts Movement.” We are committed to presenting the third Yari Yari as scheduled in Jayne’s honor.
Our perks include bags, dvds, and programs from YYN and the first two conferences – the largest events of their kind, putting hundreds of women writers and scholars of African descent in dialogue with thousands of people – as well as books by authors like Sapphire and Maya Angelou.
