No Me Quieras by Anuchka Ramos Ruiz
Las Negras by Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro
The Girls From Corona Del Mar by Rufi ThorpeAlmarios En Alquiler by Miranda Merced

I live in two languages, English and Spanish. Two days ago I began Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. By the beginning of 2014 I’ll be reading two Puerto Rican novelists recommended by a friend, an excellent reader, who loved the books so much, she sent them as gifts. Published in 2013, No Me Quieras, by Anuchka Ramos Ruiz and Las Negras by Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, published in 2012, are under 150 pages each but explore weighty themes: identity and memory challenged by nostalgia. I’m also looking forward to Rufi Thorpe’s debut novel, The Girls From Corona Del Mar. Thorpe has a quirky blog that includes poems, cartoons, and essays on writing and life. Then back to Spanish for Miranda Merced’s short story collection, Alamrios En Alquiler, that I recently picked up in the last bookstore left in Old San Juan. The back and forth between languages gets confusing at times. I’ll be excited about a book then realize it’s not available in the language the friend I’m recommending it to can understand. For me, it’s an adventure to slide so easily from one language to the other. Within their pages, these books show me lives on all sides of my migrant experience. With them in my hands, I can celebrate without judgment, and always with gratitude.

Esmeralda Santiago is a bestselling novelist and memoirist whose books include the modern classic When I Was Puerto Rican and the epic novel Conquistadoras.
