About marriage equality in Puerto Rico by Frances Davis Furr


We were standing in front of El Morro in Viejo San Juan just as the sun was setting. I was using two synced portable flashes with my 35mm 1.8 lens on my full frame Nikon camera. I realized, wow, I’ve come a long way as a photographer. A long way from searching for an area with open shade and fumbling to get the exposure right with my on camera flash. Although it wasn’t just the equipment that had changed. It was also my subjects. I was standing in front of Zulma Oliveras Vega and Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, a lesbian couple from Puerto Rico that had recently filed a marriage equality case against the Puerto Rican government.
